For two people and good weather, the SL55 wins. It is $150 a day less than the G-Wagon, quicker to 60 and the soft top folds away in about 15 seconds. The rear seats are for a handbag or a short hop, not two adults on the drive up to Fort Lauderdale. Three or more people, or real luggage, means an SUV.
Both are big Mercedes SUVs built for opposite jobs. The Maybach is about the back seat: four seats total, the rear pair recline, and the ride stays calm over every expansion joint on I-95. The G-Wagon is about the outside: upright, unmistakable and photographed wherever it parks. Wedding or client dinner? The Maybach. Group weekend on South Beach? The G.
Only $30 a day separates them. The 2025 G-Wagon is the newer car, with the updated interior and a calmer drive. The 2021 G63 has the hand-built AMG V8, 134 more horsepower and that exhaust. Put the SL55's roof down on Ocean Drive, open to two-way traffic again since February 2025, then follow Collins Avenue north past the Faena and the Fontainebleau toward Bal Harbour. Go just after sunset, when the Art Deco neon comes on.
From Brickell the causeway climbs over Biscayne Bay, crosses Virginia Key and lands on Key Biscayne. It is about 20 minutes each way, with one of the best skyline views you can get from a driver's seat.
Start where Las Olas Boulevard meets the ocean and head north on A1A past Sunrise Boulevard to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. The G-Wagon fits the chairs and the cooler. The SL55 just needs sunscreen.
