Its 4.0L twin-turbo V8 makes 469 hp and is assembled by hand at AMG in Affalterbach. Power goes to all four wheels through a 9-speed automatic, so 0 to 60 mph takes 3.8 seconds and top speed is 183 mph. It is quick, but it delivers that speed smoothly rather than violently.
The fabric roof folds electrically in about 15 seconds and works at speeds up to about 37 mph, so you can close it if a shower rolls in. The SL is a 2+2: the rear seats fit bags or small passengers on short trips, not adults on a long drive. The trunk takes a pair of soft weekend bags.
