Fort Lauderdale is made for driving something special. The ocean road runs for miles, the bridges open onto the Intracoastal, and the best dinner street in Broward is built for valet arrivals. Here are the five drives our team sends people on, with the best time and the best car for each.
Mileage math
All five drives together come to under 100 miles. The 125 miles a day included with every exotic rental covers a full day of this list with room to spare.

1. A1A along Fort Lauderdale Beach
Best time: Sunset, then again after dark. Best car: Ferrari 488 Spider or BMW M4 Convertible with the roof down. Distance: about 6 miles from the 17th Street Causeway to the Galt Ocean Mile.
This is the drive everyone pictures. The ocean on one side, palms and beach hotels on the other, and a slow, steady crowd on the sidewalk. Start at Harbor Beach, head north past Las Olas and Sunrise, and keep going up to the Galt Ocean Mile. It is not a place to go fast. It is a place to be seen.
2. Las Olas Boulevard
Best time: Friday or Saturday night, around dinner. Best car: Rolls-Royce Ghost, Lamborghini Huracán or G-Wagon. Distance: about 2 miles from downtown to the beach.
Las Olas is the heart of Fort Lauderdale. Restaurants, galleries and bars line the street, and the valets know exactly where to park a car like yours: right out front. Drive east from downtown, over the Intracoastal bridge, and you end up at the beach. Take it slow. Everybody else is.
3. The Hillsboro Mile
Best time: Weekday morning. Best car: McLaren Artura, Corvette Z06 or Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Distance: about 12 miles north of Fort Lauderdale Beach.
Keep following A1A north through Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and Pompano Beach and you reach Hillsboro Beach, a narrow strip of road between the ocean and the Intracoastal lined with some of the biggest estates in South Florida. The Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse sits at the south end. It is quiet, green and one of the prettiest stretches of road in the state.

4. The 17th Street Causeway and Port Everglades
Best time: Late afternoon on a cruise day. Best car: anything you want photos of. Distance: about 2 miles.
The 17th Street Causeway crosses the Intracoastal between the beach and the airport side of town. From the top you see Port Everglades, the cruise ships, the yachts at Pier Sixty-Six and the downtown skyline. It is one of the best photo spots in the city. Heads up: several Fort Lauderdale bridges are drawbridges, so budget a few minutes if one goes up.
5. A1A south to Miami Beach
Best time: Weekend morning, with lunch in Miami Beach. Best car: Lamborghini Urus, G-Wagon or Escalade if you are bringing friends. Distance: about 30 miles each way.
Take A1A south through Dania Beach, Hollywood and Hallandale into Sunny Isles, Bal Harbour and Miami Beach. It is slower than I-95, but it is the ocean the whole way. Have lunch on Collins Avenue, then take I-95 home if you are short on time. Want to keep going? Here are the best drives in Miami.
Tips before you go
- Watch your speed. A1A has low limits and plenty of police. The drive is about the view, not the speedometer.
- Valet everywhere. Street parking on the beach is tight and the valets on Las Olas and A1A handle exotics every night.
- Check the weather. Afternoon storms roll in fast in summer. Close the roof early.
- Fill it up before return. Cars go out full and should come back full.
